The Future of Education Technology

Education today is clearly different than the education of days past. As technology has evolved, it’s been able to be used in many classrooms across the country. The question that remains, however, is how will technology in education evolve in the future? The answer to this question isn’t so much concerning how students learn. It revolves more around how and what instructors will teach.

Even within the next ten years, learning inside the classroom should mirror how we learn outside of the classroom. Our daily lives are spent on computers, cell phones, and mobile devices and there’s an app for nearly everything ranging from learning a new language to how to play a new instrument. A great way to mirror the way we learn outside of the classroom is by introducing artificial intelligence (AI) into the classroom. Tutors and teaching assistants could support by AI technology, but not replaced. Machine learning can help educators on non-priority tasks like grading standardized tests or even taking attendance. This can help an educator devote more one-on-one time with their students to foster better relationships and ensure success within the classroom.

Interactive learning will start to become more prominent. One way this is done is by utilizing a method known as “flipping classrooms.” This is a strategy where the educational content is delivered outside of the classroom and things that are traditionally considered homework are moved into the classroom. Group work and peer collaboration become embraced more. Creating an interactive learning experience can be done by utilizing digital quizzes and tests, videos, and even implementing gaming elements into course content.

Learning should be a lifelong journey. Higher education is supposed to better prepare students for jobs and students are looking for a greater return on investment from their education costs. Students will need to gain skills that make them employable but educators need to be adaptable in how they approach teaching. Essentially, educators need to set students up for success in the future by teaching them the best ways to learn. After a students education is over, there will still be times that they must grow their skill set in their careers.

Education is always going to change and will always include the newest technology in its curriculum. To make the most of this constant change, educators should introduce new techniques and technologies into their classrooms to best serve their students and their students’ futures.
